Press & Editorial Photography student, Cameron Smith was shortlisted at the historic British Sports Journalism Awards in the young sports photographer category.
The awards highlight some of the best breakthrough talent that the UK has to offer, with entrants capturing a range of jaw-dropping images. To be recognised by the industry, whilst still studying at university, has given Cameron enormous encouragement as he continues to hone his photography skills. “It really means a lot to be shortlisted in the SJA’s. It’s the most prestigious sports photography award in the UK, so I feel very privileged.”
Cameron snapped a spectacular series of stills covering a variety of sports, from BMX to surfing. But according to Cameron, a good sports photograph goes beyond the initial wow factor the picture generates.
“In my opinion, a good sports photograph should show high peak action but also some emotion and humour. Utilising different angles and lighting can also really elevate a sports image.”
Now into the final months of his time at Falmouth, Cameron has been able to reflect on how the Press & Editorial Photography course has helped him develop as a professional photographer.
“The course at Falmouth has certainly helped me improve my skills throughout the three years. The workshops, placements and numerous modules have had an impact to how I photograph and work effectively. It’s also helped me manage my time well so I can keep shooting!”
Given the standard of work that Cameron is already producing, we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on what comes next.
